This was Phill’s tenth and Steve’s seventh. We were booked on a cruise on the Voyager from Portsmouth, England around the Faroe Islands and Iceland.

The weather prospects looked bad on the day. Fortunately just before totality we hit a break in the clouds and were able to see it! Later, in Iceland, we saw some amazing aurora.

This was the 61st eclipse of Saros 120. Totality lasted about 2 minutes from our viewpoint.

Aurora Akureyri

We were supposed to dock at Húsavík on Saturday 21 March 2015. The winds were too strong for the ship to dock so we proceeded to Akureyri. This gave us an opportunity to do a night time Aurora watch. Jacky organised a private tour with a local guide called Harry who was an Aurora photography expert.

Notice the reds and purples in the photographs. The human eye can only normally see the greens. The camera brings out more detail. One of the few occasions where a camera outdoes the eye!

Harry’s Photographs

Harry had a neat trick of taking a time exposure to capture the aurora then flashing a strobe over us to get us in the picture.
